The Facts about Commercial Development in the Highway 9 and Deerfield Areas

  • No one can force a property owner to sell their property, like Fry’s (on Highway 9) or Verizon (on Deerfield Parkway). They have to pay City of Milton taxes and maintain their properties. The City of Milton and Council Members cannot force a sale.

  • Rick has been included by Milton’s Community Development in conversations with Mr. Fry and has developed a relationship with him.

  • Milton’s Community Development Department has received multiple redevelopment plans that do not meet Milton standards, despite multiple attempts to work with the owners and developers.  Many of these proposed plans include high-density housing.  In some cases, as many as 500 apartments have been proposed, which would add 1,000 cars to the Highway 9 area and increase the strain on our schools, and our public safety support systems, like police and fire protection. These plans have been rejected because they don’t meet our standards.

  • Highway 9 and the Deerfield area will be developed, and redeveloped, because there is a lot of demand in this area. These areas could already be redeveloped but the staff of our Community Development Department and current City Council has wisely refused to accept plans that do not meet our standards.

  • Milton is a highly desirable location, and we don’t have to settle for development that doesn’t fit our vision.  Our Community Development Department and our City Council have stood firmly against settling for less because we don’t have to settle.

  • In our residential areas, Community Development has been able to encourage large land lots and practices that preserve our rural viewshed. Based on their past success, they will do the very same thing, i.e., following Milton standards for commercial development.

Rick supports Milton’s Community Development Department experts to carry out the vision of the City Council.

Rick opposes relinquishing any Council control to any other “authority.” Elected officials represent the citizens and should always be the decision makers in all land use matters.
